KfW student loan

The KfW-Förderbank student loan is provided to help students finance first degrees.

Who can apply?

Applications can be made by students who are of legal age, studying at a state or state-approved higher education institution in Germany, no more than 44 years of age on 01.04. or 01.10. before the loan commences, and fall under one of the following categories:

  • German nationals and their family members (irrespective of their nationality) who live with the German national in Federal territory.
  • EU nationals who have been lawfully and permanently resident in Germany for at least three years and their family members who live with the EU national in Federal territory (irrespective of their nationality and how long they have already lived in Federal territory).
  • “Bildungsinländer”, foreign nationals holding a German university entrance qualification.

What does the loan cover?

The loan is awarded for undergraduate programmes (Bachelor’s, Diplom, Magister, state examination) as a first or second degree, various postgraduate programmes including Master’s degrees), and doctorates. All degree programmes may be taken part-time (e.g. in work-based study) for the full duration or for certain parts of the degree. It may be possible for periods of study abroad to be funded with the loan if the student continues to be enrolled at a state or state-approved higher education institution in Germany.

Funding level

The monthly disbursements are between 100 and 650 € depending on the wishes of the student. It is possible to renegotiate this amount within the range mentioned as of the roll-over in each semester.

Interest rate and repayment calculator

The interest rate is variable. The interest rates for the next six months are adjusted on 01.04. and 01.10. (roll-over dates) according to the reference interest rate. In order to minimise the interest risk, a maximum interest rate is guaranteed for a period of 15 years from the date on which the contract is signed. The applicable interest rates are provided in the terms and conditions for the KfW programmes: www.kfw.de (under Interest Terms & Conditions). The KfW repayment calculator allows you to work out a guideline repayment rate and schedule.

The length of the KfW student loan is divided into three stages (disbursement, grace and repayment): the length of the disbursement period when applying to fund a first/second degree depends on the age of the applicant on 01.04. or 01.10. before the loan commences and is between 6 and 14 semesters. The subsequent grace period of 18 to 23 months is a repayment-free period in which only the interest due on the loan amount is paid, unless the student has chosen to have the interest deferred. The grace period can be shortened to 6 months on request. In the subsequent repayment period, the loan is repaid in monthly instalments within a maximum of 25 years.
